Danger In The Kitchen:  My Senior Mom Needed Stitches From A Can Opener That Didn’t Work

Cuts are commonplace in the kitchen – from a small nick to amputation of a digit. My own senior mom sliced a couple of fingers open as she tried to get a lid off a can when her can opener just hadn’t done it’s job.  There was lots of blood. She needed stitches.  It could have been much more serious.

The Search For A Decent, Dependable Can Opener

With that image in mind, I could write a book about all the can openers we’ve purchased with high hopes through the years for both our moms and ourselves!

Counter-top can electric openers failed as quickly as hand held cheap electric can openers.  They were ugly, hard to clean and took up counter space.  Expensive, hand-held can openers with life-time warranties didn’t seem to last any longer or do any better.  It seemed that within a short tiime,  alll of our can openers became, dull, frustrating and downright dangerous. We’d wrestle with them until we gave up, worried about cutting ourselves, and bought another one.

My husband and I are adults with 100% great dexterity.

What about seniors with limited vision, and hands that are arthritic or don’t work well?

After fixing a meal with several cans, and it being a frustration with every one … we went on a mission:  An easy—to-use can opener that would actually WORK and not take up the whole counter or drawer.

Good news: Kiss your can-opening troubles good-bye with this. We researched many can openers on Amazon to find SOMETHING that would work. When we saw all the Amazon reviews for the Kitchen Mama and the great videos,  we knew we had to give it a try.

How we wish we’d had this can opener to give to my Mom. She would have used it and LOVED it.  We would have felt a lot more confident about her safety and independence in the kitchen after her first accident.

While it seemed a little pricey, at a certain point …. You just have to have a can opener that works!

When arrived, it was large enough to fit comfortably in the hands. About 8 inches long and with some “weight” so it felt sturdy and worth the money we’d spent. The white and red coloring were attractive and it felt very well made.

After watching the video, it was pretty self-explanatory.  The operating button is right on top. There are no small gears or turnkeys to attach or manipulate.  You just put the two dials on the edge of the can, click the button and let it operate by itself!

We were delighted! A year later, we’re still delighted … and entertaining grandkids who love to see it “do it’s dance.”  It came with the batteries that were easily installed and are still working greaet.  (You might have to do this part for your Mom or Grandma.)  We’d watched the video on the Amazon page, so knew what to do.

Sure enough, within just a few seconds, we had easily attached the two round gears (smooth, with no teeth), and pressed the button. We stood back in wonder as it tilted into place and started moving around the can.  In no time, we heard the little click that it had circled the entire can.  We pressed the button again and it easily released.

The miracle:  The lid was easily lifted off, with NO SHARP EDGES on either the can or the lid!

This one purchase will save countless hours opening cans, not to mention the safety issue and potential trips to the emergency room with sharp edges that can cause serious injuries.
